Aerial Photography:
FPV Drones and Gimbal Gear
Aerial cinematography has evolved dramatically since its inception in 1858, when Gaspar-Félix Tournachon (“Nadar”) captured the first aerial photograph over Paris from a hot-air balloon.
Early advancements, driven by wartime reconnaissance and later by satellite technology, laid the crucial foundation for modern applications in surveying, filmmaking, and environmental monitoring.
The 21st century, however, marked a true paradigm shift with the proliferation of drones. This technology transformed aerial imaging from a niche, prohibitively costly endeavor—requiring helicopters, specialized mounts, and extensive permits—into an incredibly accessible and versatile filmmaking tool.
Today, consumer drones like DJI’s Mavic 3 Pro (with its triple-camera Hasselblad system) and Autel’s EVO Lite+ offer filmmakers cinema-grade 4K, 6K, and even 8K imaging, alongside intelligent GPS subject tracking and advanced obstacle avoidance.
For high-budget productions, professional heavy-lift rigs like the Freefly Alta X can carry full-sized cinema cameras such as the ARRI Alexa Mini or RED Komodo, bringing unparalleled image quality to the skies.
Concurrently, the rise of compact, powerful action cameras like the GoPro Hero 12 Black and DJI Osmo Action 4 has further democratized dynamic perspectives.
When paired with advanced gimbals—from handheld systems like the DJI RS 3 to the integrated sensor-gimbal technology of the DJI Ronin 4D—these devices deliver hyper-stabilized, cinematic footage even in extreme conditions.
This allows cinematographers to embed these rugged, compact units on gear, vehicles, or custom drone setups to capture immersive, previously impossible point-of-view shots.
